SHIPSTON TOWN BANDS

Ho, Ho, Ho and Hello to you all . . .

Once again Shipston

Town Bands

present a revue of a

very successful

Christmas, as

members from

our three  bands

sallied forth to

entertain the public with a Christmas filled with fine brass.

Here at Shipston we're very tradtitional about our Christmasses, because we know only too well that's what Midlands folk like throughout December as they enthusiastically and excitedly prepare to celebrate another Christmas season.

This time of year fulfils so many things for us as a band:  A chance to wish the compliments of the season to friends old and new, provide a shop-window for brass band music, teasing out possible new members and for raising those all important funds to keep the band economically secure for another year.

Previous visitors may have noticed that this is the first review since 2018, as 2019 and 2020 saw the arrival of something else that initially put a halt to many things, one of them being rehearsals and the long list of engagements that our bands normally attend, however, from late 2021, Stour Concert were able to rehearse once again and entertain at a few outdoor functions and our Town Band put on a Christmas Concert again. The audiences may have been small, the band socially spaced, but members were once again able to do what brass banding is all about - entertaining the public. So fortunately with no members falling victim to the dreaded Covid our Christmas output was pretty much as normal as you can get - and our mucians loved it!

and of course lots of thanks

Our thanks go not only to members of all three bands for giving up their time in this marathon fund-raiser, but also to the valiant group of collectors who joined us to stand and wish passers by a Happy Christmas as they made donations. Many thanks too, to our Band Secretary, David Birch,  for once again organising the Christmas fund raiser along with assistance from Sandra Butt, Chris Bowne and Liz Smith.

Having thanked non-playing members, like Tip Witts who missed very few supermarket sessions and those other unsung heroes who turned out to help accept donations as the band played on.  We also have to say a big thank you to those who made donations and to all the shops, supermarkets and venues who welcomed us so warmly once again this year.

To be honest I doubt if there isn't anybody in the Town Bands who don't groan or sigh a little when the Band Secretary issues the current year's Christmas List in mid-November, but any sighs and groans are soon put to one side as members fling themselves enthusiastically into another Christmas and fill in their availability lists to enable Dave to get another Shipston Christmas underway.

who is he? . . .

'at last a Shipston Band Christmas'

Well it's 'Tip' Witts of course. Over the past few years, one of Stour Concert's cornet players husband has been a staunch member of the collection team, in fact he rarely misses one of our turnouts, so we're starting this year's revue by saying a special thank you to him for all his valuable support. But Tip's not alone he is just one of our team of collectors who stand outside supermarkets and venues collecting those all important donations that helps keep the band going.

So, here's 2021's list of outings: .

It's worth pointing out too that Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the odd downside.

The early bad weather got the better of us at what should have been the start, when Stratford had to cancel our very first event along with Shipston Victorian Evening that fell foul of Covid as the organisers, quite rightly, felt it wiser to cancel for this year. A local supermarket too, decided to foregoe two of our performances for the same reason, it seems despite a very successful and full diary, Covid got the better of us occasionally. Our Band Secretary nearly fell at the last fence as his car let him down just before Christmas Eve, but thanks to the support of some of the members he was able to finish on Christmas Day, as usual.

Oh, and just in case you're wondering what's with the 'Chelsea Bulldog' soft toy pictured.

Well that's was a generous raffle contribution at the Christmas Concert, from former conductor and now Chelsea Pensioner, Mr. Charlie Cox

That's quite a daunting list when we consider that many of those supermarkets were four-hour sessions, of which some members played for the full four. So once again, an enourmous thank you to all our members for once again making such a tremendous effort to help make this such a successful Christmas.

Christmas is all about memories, of Christmas past and the many we gathered again this year, all the smiling faces we encountered, not to mention the wonderful spirit of friendship and cameraderie within our truly splendid brass bands. We've added a few pictures, taken this year at some of our many destinations, we hope you enjoy them as much as we did being there.
